Happy Early Birthday Sarawak.. Happy independence day...
"Sarawak did not join Malaysia. Sarawak FORMED Malaysia alongside Sabah, Singapore and Tanah Melayu on 16 Sept. Sarawakians never really appreciate 31 August 1957 as an Independence Day. What they really appreciate is Malaysia Day 16 Sept. That should be the National Day to be celebrated by all Malaysians.
Anyway. Happy birthday Sarawak. Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban."-

I agree that somehow the true national day should be on the 16th of Sept as both Sabah and Sarawak joined Malaysia on that day in 1963... but 31st of August is to symbolise Malaysia's freedom from any foreign power... so that's cool
the thought that Sarawak actually has its own Independence day is a little weird for me... cuz ultimately we are one nation and to have individual independence day for the state is like it doesn't belong to malaysia? my opinion... its quite awkward really _________________ Happy, Healthy & Bubbly |

I have read a shed load of books on the subject of Mayalsia, the Emergenacy, Independence and more. These are from all viewpoints not just a 'British' view.
To avoid being a communist country action was taken. The decision was taken by all states and due to the Borneo Conflict needed to be a consolidated front. The initial grouping and the subsequent regroupings have allowed Malaysia to get to where it is now. The alternation of Sultans as Head of State also endeavours to maintain the status quo.
If the Malay states had not stood firm and shoulder to shoulder your lives would undoubtedly be a lot different now. Invasion by the Japanese when the British were impotent and ineffectual, the Emergency when communism was the main aim and the Borneo conflcit when Indonesia tried to take control were all ridden out and over to the crdit of the current Malaysia. Singapores exit from the group was inevitable as was that of Brunie becuase of economic and positional reasons.
Breaking away now I believe, and this is a personal view, would be suicidal to individual states and would weaken the exisiting Malaysia as it stands, a lose lose situation. The manner in which Malaysia has developed means that you are all reliant on each other, like the body, chopping off a limb makes you less effective and functional.
By all means celebrate the occasion of independence but seriously think about true independence if you state broke away from the whole and the effect. _________________ Cheers,

When Tanah Melayu gained independence on 31/8/1957, Sarawak was still a British colony. The official day of Sarawak's independence was 22/7/1963.
Malaysia was formed by the coming together of TM, Sabah, Sarawak, etc on 16/9/1963. B4 that, Malaysia was non-existent.
So, do not be confused that Sarawak joined Malaysia but it should be Sarawak, TM etc formed Malaysia. If Semenanjung Malaysia can celebrate its independence day on 31/8, y can't Sarawak celebrate its on 22/7? Hope i'm not confusing u, Mag. _________________ Yours Truly,

The United Kingdom is the conglomeration of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This used to be referred to as Great Bitain and Northern Ireland. We compete at the Olympics as a combined nation, governed by one pariliament. When it comes to the Commonwealth Games then the individual countries compete. You ought to try living under that rule.
We have individual football teams by country, but when it comes to cricket Engand comprises Engand and Wales, in rugby union we play as individual countries although Northern Ireland joins with Southern Ireland (Eire) for that. All the various countries have regional parliaments except England. Cornwall wants independence from England. THe various Islands around the UK have different statuses.
You try living here and not be confused _________________ Cheers,
